A PROFOUND MYSTERY

A profound mystery for sure…God, the God of the universe, becomes a servant to all. Unbelievable. This tells us very specifically that God wants to be known and available to the lowest of low in life. So, Jesus says, “I am among you as one who serves”. Jesus remains available and loyal to anyone and everyone, even the least of the least.

Think about it. This is a mind-bending image of the God of the universe, blowing away all previous images of who God is and what he is like. What a scandalous and unprecedented reversal of the world’s value system. To prefer to be a servant rather than a lord or a boss or the head-honcho is unheard of in our might makes right culture. To refuse to take one’s self too seriously or to do the same for others on the basis of superficial things is to march to a different drummer for sure—and yet this is what it means to bear the stamp of authentic discipleship in our time, in any time.

Don’t be afraid to be a servant. In the eyes of the Lord it’s a badge of honor.
