  • Part 2 Hidden Talents and Hidden Hurts

Leslie Basham: Sue Thomas was working a desk job at the FBI when she was called to the front office.

Sue Thomas: There was only two reasons a person went to the front office: It was to be terminated from their job or to be interrogated by the FBI agent.

Leslie: She didn’t realize there actually was a third reason: The FBI was about to unleash her special talent.

This is Revive Our Hearts with Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth, author of The Wonder of His Name, for November 28, 2017.

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: Yesterday, we began hearing the story of Sue Thomas. When she was just eighteen months old, Sue permanently lost her hearing. Thanks to supportive parents and a good coach, she learned to play the piano and ice skate. But at her public school, they didn’t know how to teach a deaf student. Her grades suffered, and she was slapped with labels like “dummy.”

If you missed any of yesterday’s program, you’ll want to be sure and listen to it at ReviveOurHearts.com. It includes a beautiful rendition of “Silent Night” like none you’ve ever heard before sung by our guest who can’t hear any music.

Let me also mention, she couldn’t hear me asking any questions. She read my lips through this entire interview.

Sue Thomas says her academic career began to improve, thanks to one woman.   (continue to read or listen to the broadcast here…)

Part 1 The World Goes Quiet

Leslie Basham: When she was one-and-a-half years old, Sue Thomas lost all her hearing, but that didn’t stop Sue’s mother from giving her piano lessons. She could feel the music through her fingers.

Sue Thomas: It was so interesting to feel the vibrations . . . different vibrations, all over where I played. But as a kid, the novelty wore off. I would get up early, even when I was five, to play football with my brothers. And my mom would get me and drag me back to the piano.

Leslie: Those moments weren’t just about piano. This mom was instilling in her daughter a hope for her future.

Sue: She would take my chin in her fingers and tilt my head so I could read her lips and say, “Someday you’re gonna thank me for this!” And I thank God for her!   (continue to read or listen to the broadcast here)

  • Take a breath

    Take a breath

It’s that time of the year! Is your heart overflowing with thankfulness every day or are you holding your breath until the turkey arrives picture perfect on the laden table? Our National Day of Thanksgiving may be scheduled for next week, but before the count down begins and everything switches into full speed, and you’re madly dashing to complete and check off the to-do list, please remember to pause, take a deep breath, and give thanks for the countless blessings that have been bestowed upon you throughout the year, through God’s generous giving, or His gracious withholding. Oh, there is so much to give thanks for!  These winter months are a perfect time to smell the bouquets of fragrant roses that were handed to you throughout the year. First, give thanks for your very breath of life,  then take a deep breath and continue counting one by one. In today’s frantic society the season officially begins before Halloween. We all know this is nothing short of a nightmare, so if you have survived this far, then give thanks for the grace of getting through your nightmares!
